Loving oats for 100 years
One of Australia's newest centenarians, George Page, is on a mission - to make Australians change their eating habits one meal at a time.
A testament to healthy living, George attributes part of his incredible longevity to his lifelong love of oats. He has started each day for the better part of his life with a bowl of rolled oats and prunes, and advocates their benefits to a healthy body.
"People are digging their graves with their knives and forks", proclaims George. "There is so much temptation out there to eat bad food and people don't really know what's good for them anymore."
Oats offer health benefits that extend beyond nutrition and have certain medicinal effects. They are extremely high in beta-glucan - a vital soluble fibre which significantly reduces cholesterol absorption, helping to improve overall heart health.
The 100 year old resides in historic Maryborough, Queensland. George still walks over half a kilometre to get his newspapers each day, and only gave-up ballroom dancing at the age of 93.
Born in 1907, George has lived through some incredible events; including, the Great Depression, four years of military service in Papua New Guinea in WWII and working diverse jobs such as printing, cane cutting and working in a saw mill before finally settling on becoming a carpenter after his return from the war.
Clare, George's wife of 68 years, passed away in 2005. He lives in the same home they lived in together since their marriage. He gleams when he talks about Clare and the long and wonderful life which they shared together.
"If you don't have love in your life, you've got nothing," comments George who is the father of two, grandfather of four and great-grandfather of six, and considers family another important and sometimes overlooked factor in many people's lives.
George enjoyed a party with family, friends and well wishers for his 100 birthday, catching up with friends and former colleagues he hadn't seen for 40 years. George continues to amaze his family and friends with his incredible longevity and active lifestyle. He provides a role model for a healthy diet and lifestyle.
