Nature's multivitamin fruit
It seems like the apple has been replaced by kiwifruit in the old saying “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. It appears there's not much this egg-shaped powerhouse doesn't have, and its benefits extend far beyond decorating a Pavlova.
Nutritious New Zealand kiwifruit comes in gold and green varieties and both provide important vitamins, minerals and other phytochemicals (protective components in food) for everyone, no matter their stage of life.
Kiwifruit is a nutrient dense fruit containing more vitamin C than an orange, around 20 per cent more folate per 100 grams than a banana, good levels of |
potassium, magnesium and dietary fibre.
Eating kiwifruit can help your heart by lowering blockage-causing fat in the blood, keeping cholesterol levels healthy, lowering homocysteine levels, and acting as an antioxidant. |

Protects cells
The antioxidants in kiwifruit act like internal bodyguards to protect cells from free-radical damage. This keeps cells healthier for longer and counteracts damage from our lifestyles such as pollution and stress.
Vitamins C and E in kiwifruit help boost the body's defence system and immunity to help ward off the winter colds. Vitamin C also plays a role in fighting infection, collagen synthesis and wound healing.
The high vitamin C in kiwifruit may reduce wheezing and can help to repair lung damage. Vitamin C also helps with iron absorption and the prevention of anaemia.
It has a low glycemic index (GI) and makes a low kilojoule, nutritious snack.
The fibre in kiwifruit helps maintain regularity, and potassium aids fluid balance, muscle contraction and nerve transmission. Deficiencies in potassium are linked with fatigue, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps and mental confusion.
The humble little kiwifruit also contains arginine, an amino acid which could act as a vasodilator to help blood flow and has even been used in the treatment of impotence for a healthy sex life. |
